I've noticed that every single new character crash lands on earth when introduced... Then has to be rescued. While this is a good way to introduce a character, there is a problem of new characters being ignored because other characters are busy or because it's too much work.
I'm going to suggest that from now on new arrivals should start in their faction's bases unless otherwise specified in story.

There are two reasons people crash land.
First, to introduce themselves without materializing out of thin air.
Second, because ships are allowed and many staff members will throw a hissy fit if your ship is even remotely functional at the simple task of flying.

Also, what's a sci-fi thing without a bit of a crash landing? It's practically tradition. That and we can blame the movie series for establishing a single person version of it, rather then the entire ship. And suddenly showing up in base is rather G1ish. One just magically appears (and make a plug for the next new toy) and then what? Sure, you don't have to explain the way of getting there with the landing, and sure a few pods can do it without actually crashing.
Besides, crash landing works on Rule of Cool anyways. What's more fun then a dynamic entry, after all? Especially from a space faring species who travel the stars at a casual pace.

There used to be two ways to arrive either landing or crashing. Since we can't use even a semi-functional ship, we have no choice but to crash.
