In real life, certain actions during war are considered particularly heinous. Using civilian shields, shooting combat medics, rape and pillage and torture... you know the drill.
The conventions regarding war crimes were also a way to more severely punish the officers who gave orders to commit these atrocities, like bombing civilian cities of no strategic import, rather than punishing pilots who were under orders and would themselves have been punished for not doing so.
Would a space-bound civilization have a Geneva Convention? How different would it be?
