So I'm sure we're all aware, the basic combat-system for this site is one of an aggressor posting an attack, and their opponent either registering the attack as a hit or a miss, then responding accordingly.
It works for the most part, and can generally prevent godmoding.... But what about counter-attacks? Say a character jumps at another character, and attempts to climb onto their back and smack them silly or fire a round point-blank into their helm?
Can the opponent knock them off? Does that register as powerplaying? Seeing as the process of knocking them off involves damaging/striking them...?
This may be a stupid question, but I was just wondering....

I would assume as long as it isn't extremely goddmoddish it would be okay...
This wouldn't work:
user 1: The Zombie Plank attacks Autobot Generic, jumping at the autobot, attempting to grab Generic's throat and strangle him...
user 2: Generic moves quickly and stabs the distracted Zombie plank through the head
This would work:
user 1: The Zombie Plank attacks Autobot Generic, jumping at the autobot, attempting to grab Generic's throat and strangle him...
user 2: Generic sees the decepticon coming towards him and falls down, kicking his feet up in an attempt to launch the feral Zombie Plank away from him...
Your going to get a kick out of this, Zombie Plank!

I appreciate the input, and you're probably correct, but I'd like the staff's official stand-point on this as well.

Ultimately it's a little hard to judge this scenario in most occasions I would say you should react to the grapple in which ever form fits your character (jumping on your back), then attempt to remove the other character will defending yourself from any follow up attacks in the post before (such as the point-blank shot you mentioned). So in most occasions Backbeat's example is the best description.
However as I said it's a little hard to judge so some leniency can be put in the situation, if you remove them with the sole intent of escaping an unfavourable position rather than also trying to damage them I guess then there's no real problem. I hope that makes sense.

It does, and I appreciate your response. buyt I'm still not entirely clear....
Take Grimlock; he's massively strong and he's spiky. Same for Predaking. The simple act of brushing an opponent off would cause damage. Add to that the fact neither is the sort to just brush an opponent off.....
If my response to, say, Backbeat, because he just posted, jumping at me is to smack him away before he can glom on, is that objectionable?
Mind you that being backhanded away like that would probably jar him and send him tumbling, but not KO him or hurt him overly.

Well if someone's jumping on a character of that size I guess it would make sense for them to be backhanded away, however as long as the other player was capable of deafening the blow so it would deal negligible damage then it would be ok I believe. I believe personally it would need to also leave them both in a neutral position so neither side was at an advantage afterwards.

So to be utterly clear, if someone jumps at me, and my response is to swat them away, they invited it and things are all good...?

As long as the scenario does not put them in a disadvantageous position, if your only action was to stop them from climbing you then I would consider that fair. If on the other hand after stopping them you proceeded to advance on them and attack them then I'd consider that less fair, pretty much after backhanding them it should be there post to react.

I'd say within reason...
Just don't abuse this power...
