So, I just joined and have read up on character creation and site rules, but I find myself anxious to start out fully. Honestly, I'm not quite sure what I'm asking for, but I would appreciate some help getting over this.

Welcome to the party!
My advice, build a simple character and jump in as quickly as you can. Trust me, this community is worth it.

I already have two characters in my head that I need to get approved, so I'm doing ok in that department.
But how can I jump in? How does one do that?

You need to write up the app and then have it approved. Once you have that done, just jump in, whether it is in an active thread on the decepticon or Autobot side. As to which side you choose (there is also the neutral one, but I'm not sure if there's many neutrals around at the moment) it really doesn't matter. It's up to you what you prefer your character to be. Nobody bites here - much - so if you have any questions you are very welcome to ask. Admins are your best call but some of the simpler questions can be asked in the shoutbox too!

Thank you. But how do I jump in? Do I have to talk to someone or...?

No. You get the template for the application of your character. You fill out that template and post it into 'Completed - awaiting approval' section. Don't remember the exact name, but when you see it you'll know that's the one. Then you wait. When an admin says, approved. It means you are ready to rp, pretty much. If there is something the admin thinks you should fix, they will tell you. Don't worry about that.

Yes, but I'm talking about after. What do I do after their approved?
Do I just pick one and post, or do I ask the other posters first?

You could have them arrive at their faction's current fortification.
I.e. after the ships crashed, some autobots are still finding their way to Metroplex in Iacon, or the decepticons are regrouping in Kaon after their leader arrived with the nemesis, the new decepticons moving in.

Thanks, but that still doesn't answer my question. Do I need to talk to the thread creators before posting in said thread, or do I just post and hope it flows?

You don't need to talk to anyone to enter a thread in a location.

I mean an already started one. Or did jump in mean something else?

Nono, you can just jump right in. No questions need to be asked. I will get to your application tomorrow.

Any thread, you can make a new location or just join in an already made one.

Thanks. Not knowing this was what half my anxiety was about.

Sorry I’m a little late to the party but unless specifically stated all Main Universe threads are free to rp in. So you can post in them the second your approved, just try not to pop out of nowhere even just a mention of where you’ve came from is a good idea. The only exclusions to the free access would be unless there’s a specific event you can’t rp in the enemies base.

Just curious: if a character changes alt modes, do you have to resubmit them?

no, not really. All you have to do is notify me of the change and I'll look at it.
